Vibrant Communities Working to Involve Cities in “Opportunity for All”

The Tamarack Institute’s Vibrant Communities (VC) is excited to be working to identify and illuminate ways that community-based organizations and cities can be active participants in “Opportunity for All - Canada’s First Poverty Reduction Strategy.”

During the development of the strategy, the Cities Reducing Poverty network worked with Employment and Social Development Canada to support data collection and consultations. For example, Vibrant Communities and the Cities Reducing Poverty network partnered with Employment and Social Development Canada to host 33 community conversations from coast to coast. Cities Reducing Poverty members and the Tamarack Institute also submitted written submissions during the consultation period. We were excited to see the results of these consultations and their lessons in both the Federal What We Heard report and the strategy itself.

10 Things Vibrant Communities - Cities Reducing Poverty Will Offer in 2019

Vibrant Communities - Cities Reducing Poverty (VC – CRP) is a national collective impact movement aimed at reducing poverty through the place-based efforts of multi-sector roundtables and the alignment of strategies at the municipal, provincial, territorial, and federal levels. Our primary purpose is to make the work local poverty reduction initiatives easier and more effective.

Our growing network is comprised of 70 CRP members representing more than 330 communities who are each actively working to reduce and eradicate poverty across Canada.

After just under a year of research and engaging Islanders in a discussion on challenges and solutions to poverty, Prince Edward Island (PEI) released their Poverty Reduction Action Plan in November 2018.

On September 6, 2018, the Roundtable on Poverty Reduction for the Montreal Borough of Côte-des-neiges-Notre-Dame-de-Graçe submitted its recommendations to the Borough Council on how it could deploy its political, social and economic capital to reduce poverty within its boundaries.

The Roundtable was launched by former Borough Mayor, Russell Copeman, in early 2017 who was convinced the best way to develop a local plan was to follow Tamarack’s tried and true engagement process. After her election in late 2017, new Borough Mayor Sue Montgomery gave her blessing to the Roundtable members to conclude their work with caveat that an accent be put on “actionable” recommendations for poverty reduction by the Borough Council.

Highlights from Cities Innovating to Reduce Poverty: Eastern Summit 2018

The Cities Innovating to Reduce Poverty Eastern Regional Summit took place in Mississauga from September 18 – 19th bringing together 206 learners from more than 29 cities and communities from across Eastern Canada. This included government and public sector staff, elected officials, community agency leaders, and interested residents collaborating to learn from one another on how we end poverty in Canada.
