Every year, our organization, BYTE – Empowering Youth Society, conducts a “Yukon Youth Want…” campaign where we ask youth “what do you Yukon youth want?” We collect the answers in a photo essay and compile the results in a letter to our local politicians. The letter serves as a reminder that youth are paying attention, they are engaged and they care about their community. We ask our local leaders to respond or share their platforms as it relates to what Yukon youth want.

I came to community change work as a young person with lived experience. I wanted to find community where my peers and other young people felt empowered and heard. I wanted to see youth as leaders and young people given the space to create and innovate. If you are not me, how can you know what I want or need?
I have found the meaningfulness of being asked the simple question of trying to know what I want or what I need to be diluted as the target audience shifts from me to we. Too often have I felt my own voice get watered down amongst the masses. Sometimes to the point where I am no longer motivated in participating in such efforts to include my two cents in a census.
