Read MoreI have been designing, facilitating and hosting organizational and community events for more than twenty years. While I do believe in the adage from Open Space that "whoever comes IS the right people", at the same time, I appreciate that to build a robust and shared vision, or to generate new ideas for how to address a complex shared issue, it is essential that individuals -- or sectors -- that hold a key perspective should be present.

I am curious about people's varied definitions of it and how the sense of belonging to something beyond oneself, while at times a burden, can serve as a source of inspiration for generosity and shared action. Often, people's definition of community includes a specific physical place where one lives or works, a place whose well-being is linked to that of your own. Innovation - finding new ways of thinking about and addressing long-standing issues - is another concept I have studied for some time. Throughout much of my adult life, my work has focused on the intersection between community and innovation: nurturing new approaches to address the social challenges that exist within communities by working together. This is community innovation.

I just spent two days with colleagues attending Policy Link's Equity Summit in Detroit. There were 2300 folks attending from across the US and internationally. The theme of the summit was to raise and change the discussion around Equtiy - that it is no longer an ethical thing to do but is becoming an economic imperative as the demographics are significantly shifting in the US.
