P.E.I. Discussing Poverty and Poverty Solutions with Islanders

On November 14, 2017, the Government of Prince Edward Island (P.E.I.) committed to a Poverty Reduction Plan as part of the province's Throne Speech, and more recently, appointed a 12-person multi-sectoral advisory committee to bring forward short and longer-term solutions to poverty in a Poverty Reduction Plan. The Plan is expected to be ready for fall 2018 and will include actions in the areas of housing, food security, education and employment, says Committee Chair, Roxanne Carter-Thompson.

The Poverty Studies Summer Institute is a chance to be part of an intimate learning community with peers – practitioners, people with lived experience, students and ministry workers – to learn about and discuss the causes and impacts of poverty as well as how we best alleviate and end them.

Living Wage Week in Canada, 2016: Engaging Businesses

October 31st - November 6th marks the annual Living Wage Week in Canada for 2016.

This is a week where living wage organizers celebrate employers in their role of providing staff with liveable wages, and support them to raise awareness about what a living wage is, as well as the benefits of paying one.

There are now living wage rates calculated in 53 communities across Canada. Of which, 26 are linked to Cities Reducing Poverty comprehensive poverty reduction initiatives, an increase of five in the past year, with even more communities in the process of researching or developing a living wage campaign.

Coming out of the Poverty Reduction Summit in Ottawa in May, 2015, one of the ideas that Paul Born from Tamarack and Brock Carleton from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities had was to develop a paper that explored the increasing interest and involvement of municipalities in poverty reduction work across Canada.  

The result is 10 – A Guide for Cities Reducing Poverty that will be presented at the upcoming Cities Reducing Poverty: When Mayors Lead summit in Edmonton 5-7 April.
