Sylvia is a Consulting Director of the Tamarack Institute’s Collective Impact Idea Area and also supports Tamarack’s Community Engagement Idea Area. She is passionate about community change and what becomes possible when residents and various sector leaders share an aspirational vision for their future. Sylvia believes that when the assets of residents and community are recognized and connected they become powerful drivers of community change. Sylvia is an internationally recognized community-builder and trainer. Over the past five years, much of Sylvia’s work has focused on building awareness and capacity in the areas of Collective Impact and Community Engagement throughout North America.

Frameworks for Measuring Community Health

The Canadian Council on Social Determinants of Health (CCSDH) has recently released a new paper, A Review of Frameworks on the Determinants of Health that reviews 36 frameworks from a variety of sectors on the determinants of health, from Canada and abroad, and provides an in­depth assessment of seven frameworks that are particularly relevant to the Canadian context.

Rural Health Hubs Framework & the Collective Impact Opportunity

Developed and endorsed by a multi-sector rural health hub advisory committee, the Rural Health Hubs Framework for Ontario was finalized in January 2015. A central recommendation within the framework calls for the development and implementation of local Community Health Plans in rural communities in collaboration with local health and social service providers and community members.

What is most surprising is that often the innovations that show the most promise are those that combine existing resources in new ways. This pattern of social innovation is often referred to as bricolage.
