Sylvia Cheuy
Sylvia is a Consulting Director of the Tamarack Institute’s Collective Impact Idea Area and also supports Tamarack’s Community Engagement Idea Area. She is passionate about community change and what becomes possible when residents and various sector leaders share an aspirational vision for their future. Sylvia believes that when the assets of residents and community are recognized and connected they become powerful drivers of community change. Sylvia is an internationally recognized community-builder and trainer. Over the past five years, much of Sylvia’s work has focused on building awareness and capacity in the areas of Collective Impact and Community Engagement throughout North America.

Putting Community in Collective Impact

Considerable attention is being paid to the role and importance of community engagement in successful collective impact efforts. The recent paper entitled Putting Community in Collective Impact by Richard Harwood and published by the Collective Impact Forum, dives more deeply into this important issue and concludes that, "civic culture matters for Collective Impact. Big Time!" Civic culture refers to the unique characteristics that describe "how a community works: how trust is formed, why and how people engage with each other; and the degree of readiness for change amongst leaders." Each community has its own civic culture and paying attention to it, makes it possible to accelerate and deepen collective impact efforts.

The Power of Measuring Volunteer Impact

For twenty-­two years, The Optimist Club of Orangeville have hosted Christmas in the Park at Kaycee Gardens throughout the month of December. Countless volunteer hours go into creating this free, pet­friendly event that transforms a small local park into a magical winter wonderland with more than 50,000 bulbs lighting up several unique Christmas­themed displays. Musical groups and other local talent take turns offering live performances throughout the month, making this local tradition, a perfect way for people young and old to enjoy the holiday spirit.
