In light of the current COVID-19 crisis, the number of jobs and internships available for youth this summer will have significantly decreased in comparison to previous years. In some cases, the jobs themselves will look very different as social distancing continues to impact the labour market.
The reality of remote work that many people have been adapting to, since March, is also becoming a reality for youth this summer. This may be daunting to some who try to imagine what it will mean to work from an off-site location. What tools and resources will be available? What will communications with supervisors and other staff look like? What will be needed to create a productive work environment?
To start answering these questions with, and for, youth who are navigating a remote workplace, Tamarack Institute has partnered with the Canadian Council for Youth Prosperity to adapt Tamarack’s Guidelines for Working Remotely for a youth audience. The result is a new resource called Virtual Work is Here: A Guide for Youth.
Within the Guide, youth will find advice about securing and succeeding in virtual positions, including tips from youth who are new or experienced virtual workers, and who were interviewed for the guide. This guide aims to provide support for every step of a virtual career including why adjusting to virtual work is important; tips for hunting for virtual work; creating a virtual workspace; and much more.
On June 19, the Guide will be an online resource and will be available in French, in the meantime, download your free PDF copy of the Guide. Share it with youth, distribute it through your network, and send us your feedback and comments at info(at)ccyp-ccpj.org.
