This case study explores the impacts and learnings from the first five years of Communities Building Youth Futures (CBYF), a multi-sectoral collaboration between youth leaders, the Tamarack Institute, and other community allies. Between 2019 and 2024, CBYF has supported almost 70,000 young people in 20 communities to re-engage in school, secure stable employment, and develop as leaders and mentors in their communities.
Communities recognized early on in their CBYF initiatives that championing youth-led action teams requires ongoing capacity-building for youth leaders, leading to the creation of the theme of youth engagement and leadership. CBYF supported young people to build their leadership skills, take on positions of power in their local communities, and advocate publicly for youth engagement. The case study includes:
- Narration by youth leader Jodie Konior from CBYF Oxford County, Ontario
- In-depth descriptions of CBYF initiatives related to youth engagement & leadership including Oxford County’s Youth Engagement Grants, Corner Brook’s Youth Connection Grants, Sudbury’s Youth-Led Projects, and Kahnawà:ke’s COP26 delegation
- Quotes from 26 youth participants, leaders, and leadership table members about their experiences with CBYF
- Key data, learnings, outcomes, and other impacts of the initiative
