This case study explores the impacts and learnings from the first five years of Communities Building Youth Futures (CBYF), a multi-sectoral collaboration between youth leaders, the Tamarack Institute, and other community allies. Between 2019 and 2024, CBYF has supported almost 70,000 young people in 20 communities to re-engage in school, secure stable employment, and develop as leaders and mentors in their communities.
Many youth engaged in CBYF initiatives reported that they rely on services but struggle to access them for many reasons. They may feel intimidated by the bureaucracy or intake processes, have prior negative experiences accessing services, or be unaware of what services are available. This case study explores the community initiatives that supported youth as they navigated services and other supports. The case study includes:
- Narration by youth leader Jelise Keating from CBYF Future North (Sudbury, Ontario)
- In-depth descriptions of CBYF initiatives related to service navigation and access to supports including Future North’s Community Map, Prince Albert’s Pihtikwe: Beyond the Doorstep video service directory, Chilliwack’s Channeling Youth Voices documentary, and Oxford County’s Youth Employment & Education Fund
- Quotes from 17 youth participants, leaders, and leadership table members about their experiences with CBYF
- Key data, learnings, outcomes, and other impacts of the initiative
