This case study explores the impacts and learnings from the first five years of Communities Building Youth Futures (CBYF), a multi-sectoral collaboration between youth leaders, the Tamarack Institute, and other community allies. Between 2019 and 2024, CBYF has supported almost 70,000 young people in 20 communities to re-engage in school, secure stable employment, and develop as leaders and mentors in their communities.
CBYF communities identified the theme of employment and mentorship as an area of opportunity for greater support in the early stages of the initiative. CBYF youth-led initiatives helped young people develop employment skills, build resume experience, connect with mentors, and eventually, transition to stable employment. The case study includes:
- Narration by youth leader Blue Vetsch from CBYF Grande Prairie, Alberta
- In-depth descriptions of CBYF initiatives related to employment & mentorship including Grande Prairie’s Youth Employer Forum, Chilliwack’s trades training initiatives, Moncton’s job fairs, Corner Brook’s Future Fair, Digby’s Employment Symposium, Portage la Prairie’s Portage Job Fair, Regina’s Discovering Your Path workshops, and Chilliwack’s mentorship and skateboarding initiatives
- Quotes from 32 youth participants, leaders, and leadership table members about their experiences with CBYF
- Key data, learnings, outcomes, and other impacts of the initiative
