Taking Risks

Written by Paul Born | February 3, 2020

As you work at deepening community in your life and for those you care about, consider...Taking Risks

“Determination, energy and courage appear spontaneously when we care deeply about something. We take risks that are unimaginable in any other context.” - Meg Wheatley

Stepping out of your comfort zone is never easy. Leaping into unknown territory can bring with it some deep feelings of vulnerability, fear, and anxiety which can also culminate into physical symptoms of heart palpitations, flutters in the belly, or something much more severe.

But what would our world look like if people didn’t take risks? If people didn’t put themselves out there and try something new? If we didn’t push the bounds of our potential? If we do not reach out to someone we care about?

It’s important for us to remember that taking risks is important to both our personal and community development. Communities are fuelled by people who are: trying new things, daring to be bold, and allowing themselves to dream about what could be. Even if we don’t achieve what we have set out to do, we may find that new doors are opened, new potential is unveiled, and important lessons have been learned.

“Ships in harbour are safe, but that’s not what ships are built for.” – John Shedd.

This week, no matter how bold or subtle, try something new. Take a risk. Put yourself out there and see what comes back to you!
