What We’re Hearing: Community Members Have the Heart for Changemaking

Changemaker Self Assessment

Last year, we launched the Changemaker Self-Assessment, a reflection tool to build awareness of the five interconnected skills needed to make community and systems change. The short quiz allows you to see where your strengths and opportunities lie within the interconnected skills. One year later, we’ve heard from over 200 people. What does the collective data say? Read on to find out.

We invite you to take the self-assessment, build a learning plan individually and across your team, and be sure to check out our Membership Options for ongoing support from our team.

Virtual Workshop: Intentional Collaboration with Lived Expertise - Power, Bias, and Systems Change

        Type: Virtual Workshop

        Date: November 18, 1 – 4:30pm ET

This workshop helps participants learn effective, best practices for collaborating intentionally with people who bring lived and living experience to their work. Instead of treating lived expertise as a checkbox, we focus on equitable partnership, centring power sharing, removing systemic barriers, noticing bias, and using futuring principles to guide systems change that’s grounded, accountable, and sustainable.

              What We're Up To

The Tamarack Team including Lisa, Sylvia, Jorge, Justin, Yas, and Steph spent three days in Toronto facilitating the Community Change Summit with changemakers from across Canada and beyond. Attendees reported that one of their favourite parts was the tours of community organizations across Toronto.

Sylvia is working with Theatre Newfoundland & Labrador on a 10-year plan to support their ongoing sustainability.

Daren is finishing a year-long strategy planning project with Kin Canada, an organisation of volunteers working to support the greatest needs in their communities.

Yas and Christiana worked with the Enchanté network, a supporter of 2SLGBTQ+ groups across Canada to deliver a workshop on Human Resources for small non-profits.

              Successes from our Network

Tamarack partnered with the Social Research and Demonstration Corporation (SRDC) to explore how our network members are understanding and applying community finance approaches. Read the paper to discover real-world examples from Alberni Clayoquot Region, Richmond, Edmonton, Saskatoon, and Southern Georgian Bay.

Over the last year, the Tamarack Institute and the Foundation of Greater Montreal (FGM) hosted a Community of Practice exploring key skills for change - from collective leadership to impact evaluation. This article contains insights from the grassroots groups and social movements who participated.
