Seekers Journal

Dear there,

"Maybe we’re on the cusp of some great cracking. Instead of just paying lip service to community while living for autonomy, I get the sense a lot of people are actually about to make the break and immerse themselves in demanding local community movements."

- David Brooks (Quoted from The Great Affluence Fallacy)

Finding inspiration and true connection can be a challenge sometimes. One of our members, Nicole Dawe has been sharing her inspirational blog series with us as she reflects on the teachings of Paul Born's book Deepening Community: Finding Joy Together in Chaotic Times. Nicole has been inspired by Paul's descriptions of the four pillars of deep community: sharing our stories, taking the time to enjoy one another, taking care of one another, and working together for a better world. Together, these pillars can truly deepen our connections with each other.

In this August edition of Seekers Journal, we highlight some of the posts and resources that shine a light on this space where all of these pillars come together- we reflect on those moments where we have achieved true connections and hope to spark the inspiration for you to reach out too.

We look forward to connecting with you and don't forget, we love to hear your stories, share your resources and learn from your experiences! Be sure to connect with us online at www.deepeningcommunity.ca or on Facebook and Twitter.

Be inspired! Happy reading!

I assume that at least 80% of people want to be connected to other people, particularly their neighbours. We are social creatures. Our brains crave interaction with others. It brings us joy. While we can have communities of interest and friends and family that we are in deep community with despite geography, it isn't a replacement for knowing those who live closest to us. Knowing our neighbours makes us feel safer, allows us to help one another and creates opportunities for spontaneous human connection and fun.

I didn't always make this assumption. In Deepening Community, Paul Born shared a story of the first condo building he and his wife lived in and how they didn't really know anyone. I was surprised by this and comforted. That's the life I'm living...

Many are Cold...But Few Are Frozen

Many are cold… but few are frozen
Those words by the exquisite writer Anne Michaels provide a glimpse into the source of Canada’s ingenuity.

You can’t understand Canada without understanding that you are never very far from winter here.

Our ingenuity comes from snow, ice and a harsh cold climate. Yes, our climate is warming. But it is still pretty cold in most places for a good portion of the year...
