Hi there,
Thank you for joining us on the April Municipal Government Representatives (MGR) CoP. On this call, we heard from Ramana Zanfongnon, who spoke to the City of Montreal’s Solidarity and Inclusion plan in the context of growing inequities in urban Montreal.
You can now download the PowerPoint slides and watch the recording (passcode: t!b&RJF6).
Top Takeaways
- Montreal’s Service de la diversité et de l'inclusion sociale (SDIS) ensures that everyone has a place in Montreal regardless of their status, identity, origin, or abilities.
- Since 2003, the City has engaged an integrated urban revitalization process. While this has been implemented in areas with concentrated poverty, programs benefit all of society (see the Curb-Cut Effect).
- SDIS' 5 big ambitions that aim to reduce social inequalities are:
- Access to quality and local services regardless of one’s status or conditions
- A response to basic food and housing needs
- A population that can take ownership of public spaces and thrive in them
- An exemplary city that acts in a coherent way across all departments against all forms of systemic discrimination
- People who can fully contribute to economic life according to their education and aspirations
- Compiling all plans into one document results in every department having to think about how to include the vulnerable.
- Funds from the Quebec Government allow the City to act on food security, the fight against homelessness, and the social participation of those that are vulnerable.
