Hi there,
Thank you for joining us at the September Municipal Government Representatives (MGR) CoP. On this call, we heard from Tamarack’s Myriam Berube and Karenveer Pannu who spoke to how participatory grantmaking can build equity and inclusion, support strategic investing, and impactfully support the social sector.
You can now download the powerpoint slides and watch the recording (passcode: rC8u%nsA).
Top Takeaways
- There is a continuum between funders informing the community of what funding priorities are, to communities advising funders, to participatory grantmaking where communities hold the power to make big decisions
- Participatory grantmaking recognizes the community as experts and engages them early in a co-design process around a high-level shared goal. The result is different (and often more meaningful) when we centre lived/living experience
- In participatory grantmaking, participants have the opportunity to interact with funders to ask questions and test ideas
- In Peel, a people's panel was recruited and engaged to create criteria, review and rank applications, and deeply explore which ideas should be supported
- As this group (and not the whole community) holds power, it needs to be diverse and representative of the community it is serving
