Hi there,
On Tuesday's Mid-Ontario Rural Convenor Call, Sandy Dietrich-Bell, CEO of oneRoof Youth Services, shared their approach to diverting youth from homelessness before reaching the shelter system by matching them with a host family in the community.
You can now access the meeting recording (passcode: s$$2qg@5).
Key Highlights:
- Waterloo Region's Host Homes model was developed and successful in Perth County (Stratford) before being adapted for an urban city.
- This model helps overcome the lack of affordable stock by diverting youth into an existing household, rather than an individual unit.
- Working closely with the schools is key to identify and support youth before they enter the shelter system, and has improved educational outcomes by helping youth stay in-school.
- Alberta's Youth Assessment Prioritization Tool (YAP) has been an improvement from the SPDAT and proven to be just as effective by the Canadian Observatory on Homelessness. It takes circumstance into account and helps build rapport with youth.
- The model was developed with youth in mind, but may have potential for supporting individuals with low acuity at any age (ex. newly vulnerable adults, seniors).
