CASE STUDY | The Social Justice Imperative in the Northwest Territories

Case Studies, Cities Reducing Poverty, Social Justice, Elle Richards, CRP Publications

The 2020 pandemic has exacerbated communities’ pre-existing challenges across the country, and it is anticipated that these effects will be felt for years to come. By prioritizing grassroots social justice actions that advance poverty reduction, one group in the Northwest Territories is leading the way in efforts to make life better.

Although the rate of COVID-19 cases in the North has been lower than in the provinces, pandemic responses instituted by the Government of the Northwest Territories (NWT) have resulted in several policy changes intended to protect and support residents of the Territory.

Vibrant Communities

By Vibrant Communities

Vibrant Communities supports cities and local leaders to develop and implement large-scale change initiatives through four learning networks: Ending Poverty, Deepening Community, Building Youth Futures and Climate Transitions. Our belief is that when we are effective in strengthening community capacity to engage citizens, lead collaboratively, deepen community and reduce poverty, our work contributes to the building of peace and more equitable society.
