14 BC Members Receive Provincial Funding for Poverty Reduction

The Government of British Columbia has announced $5M in funding through the Poverty Reduction Planning and Action Program that will empower 54 local governments to create on-the-ground solutions to ending poverty. The program supports the rollout of TogetherBC, the province's first poverty reduction strategy, and marks the first time that local governments have received provincial funding to develop and implement local poverty reduction plans.

Edmonton Supporting Newcomers with Self-Isolation Supports

To support families to safely self-isolate, the United Communities of the Ethiopian Diaspora has raised and donated funds to support families living in densely populated dwellings to meet provincial regulations. This support is critical to support Edmonton newcomers that live in small, low-income housing units, and that reside with a large number of family members.

Over 1 Million Canadians Lifted out of Poverty: Q&A With Maytree on Canada's Updated MBM

On February 24, 2020, Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) released results from the 2018 Canadian Income survey that showed that, since 2015, more than 1 million Canadians have been lifted out of poverty. This represents the largest three-year reduction in Canadian history. Canada’s poverty rate continues on a downward trend, and poverty rates have decreased since 2015 in all 10 provinces.

BC Government Funding Available for Local Poverty Reduction Efforts

The Government of BC’s Poverty Reduction Planning & Action Program is providing $5M over three years to support local governments to reduce poverty at the local level. The program was developed based on a recognition that local governments are crucial partners in poverty reduction. They see the impact of poverty first-hand and play a central role in developing collaborative local solutions.
