Reflections on Community Climate Transitions – seven months in

At this time last year, Community Climate Transitions was merely an idea. There was a vision of what we could create together, but not yet the resources or people to make it happen

I joined the Tamarack team in April 2021 to see how we might make this dream a reality, and my colleague Jorge Garza joined a few months later. We’re proud of what we’ve achieved in a short amount of time.

As 2021 comes to a close, we’re taking time to reflect on what we’ve achieved and what lies ahead.

Below are some highlights from the past year:

  • We officially launched Community Climate Transitions in June 2021 with our new website, brochure and first-ever newsletter!
  • We formed an Advisory Council of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) experts from across Canada to inform the development of a major publication: 10 – A Guide for Advancing the SDGs in Your Community.
  • We hosted/co-hosted 8 workshops and webinars around the theme of localizing the SDGs, including this half-day workshop, a webinar showcasing several exemplary SDG projects from across Canada, and another featuring two members of Communities Ending Poverty that are using the SDGs as a framework. We also hosted webinars on climate transition and collective impact (recording only available in French) and climate change and ending poverty.
  • We launched our first Community of Practice co-hosted with SDSN Canada, focused on localizing the SDGs. The 90-member community has met three times so far and has been diving deep into the topic of community engagement. The next theme we’ll explore is SDG data and indicators.
  • We announced a Call for Applicants for a Climate Transitions Cohort we are forming to support communities to advance a just and equitable climate transition through collective impact. We also hosted a Q&A session for interested communities.
  • We published 12 blogs and 9 publications (case studies, articles, guides) on topics related to the SDGs; the intersections of climate, poverty, justice and equity; collective impact; and community change.
  • We grew the reach of our bi-monthly newsletter to more than 550 subscribers.
  • All our publications and newsletters have been produced in both French and English, as serving francophone learners in Quebec and elsewhere in Canada is a priority for our team.

This is just the beginning for Community Climate Transitions and we are so excited about what lies ahead.

Looking forward

Some of the things we’re most looking forward to in 2022 are:

  • Launching the Climate Transitions Cohort in February with a group of trailblazing communities from across Canada, and accelerating their work through monthly workshops, sharing useful resources, peer learning opportunities, one-on-one support and expert coaching.
  • Growing and strengthening the SDG Localization Community of Practice by bringing in new participants while also deepening engagement with existing ones.
  • Hosting a first national gathering for Community Climate Transitions in the fall.
  • Developing publications, webinars and workshops that help community changemakers do even more meaningful and impactful work.
  • Continuing to develop and deepen our partnerships with other organizations working in the climate, equity and SDG spaces, as we strongly believe in the power of collaboration across the ecosystem.

Thank you for embarking on this journey with us. Wishing you a safe and happy holiday season and all the best for the year ahead.

With gratitude,

The Community Climate Transitions team
