Hello there,
Thank you for joining our July Communities Ending Poverty Convenor call where members heard from Communities Building Youth Futures (CBYF), about engaging youth, and exploring questions and challenges which surfaced during the last All-Convenor Call.
Youth leaders Taylor Smith and Jelise Keating shared their perspective, on building pathways to increase youth engagement, leadership and prosperity in their communities.

Discussion Highlights
- Don’t assume – a conversation with even one youth can help reveal why they aren’t engaging. Ask youth to co-design accessible spaces; define what skills and capacities they need to build; provide feedback on how they’re being engaged; etc.
- Build trust by listening and actioning youth feedback
- Go into youth spaces to engage and build relationships; schools are important partners
- Start by engaging one or two youth meaningfully; they can be champions in helping to reach more youth
- Shift power by engaging a collective of youth at the table, creating space where adults aren’t ‘in-charge’, and providing honorariums
We would like to compile honorarium policies to share as a resource for collaboratives engaging youth. If you have a policy that can be shared, please send it to Natasha.
