We've got exciting news in our March Communities Building Youth Futures Newsletter!

First up is our 10 - A Guide for Navigating the Future of Work (For Youth and Employers).  We're excited to be sharing this new resource for our subscribers first.  We're also featuring several blog posts on the nature of work and mentorship from our own staff, CBYF communities, and university students.    Be sure to tune in for our July 20th Webinar on Youth Leading Issues that Matter to them. We also have our June 15th Webinar, A Dialogue on the Topic of System Change to Improve Data Collection and Access, available online to watch at your convenience.   Lastly we are excited to be announcing that CBYF will be having an annual gathering in the fall.  Please scroll down for additional details.   10 – A Guide for Navigating the Future of Work (For Youth and Employers)   10 – A Guide for Navigating the Future of Work (For Youth and Employers) filters through the noise and focuses in on what matters to youth and employers as they navigate the shifting landscape of the future of work. Click Here to read the Literature Review Click Here to see the Summary of our Survey   Youthful Resources in CBYF Communities   Tamarack Institute and Youthful Cities have developed a common set of youth-focused indicators that align with the CBYF goals and priorities identified in the communities. Data and insights from the perspective of young people were collected by youth from each of the CBYF communities.   The resulting dataset was used to create a Guide on a Page for our CBYF communities and was also included in The Grid, Youthful Cities’ open data hub. Please click here to see the all the Guides on a Page   The Unspoken Reality of Being Young and Involved in Spaces of Power   Does it show that I'm younger? Should I dress differently? Can I speak up and give my opinion in this conversation? Am I qualified for the job?   I've asked myself these questions frequently throughout my professional life, which began at the age of 18. The closer I got to decision-making spaces, or places of power, the more these questions grew. How to find one's place and influence collective social change processes when one is young and experiences insecurities or imposter syndrome?   Whether it is because of my age, my skin color, or my accent, I always anticipate how I will be perceived by my interlocutors. Further, these considerations become more pronounced by being at the intersection of several identity factors at once (age, gender, skin color, language, etc.).   Today I'm sharing my little "tricks" to counteract these parasitic thoughts. I hope they can inspire other youth that might recognize themselves in these situations Read more of Layla's Blog   About Mentorship   We asked one of our CBYF community leads, Phillip Mock to write about his experience on mentorship.  He writes about how in CBYF Chatham-Kent the term mentorship (small m) is a concept that has grown and evolved over the past 3 years. To him, mentorship is the building of mutually-beneficial relationships that are rooted in sharing, reciprocation, affection, and co-construction of goals. Read Phillip's Thoughts on Mentorship here   Brock University Blogs   Students from Brock University were tasked with writing blog posts about their experience in their work placements.  We are proud to present three of these blog posts from the students.    The first is How Experience and Networking Could Skyrocket Your Career! from Alisha Gnomes.   She explores how setting foot into the real world can be overwhelming, but shows how student placement opportunities are a great opportunity.   Read her Blog Post Here   Next up is Effective Communication in the Workplace (Ideas on How to Improve) by Stuart Loop.  He writes about how effective communication is critical for career development and offers advice about how to improve communication.  Read his Blog Here   Lastly we have Tyrell Smikle's blog, COLLABORATION IN ACTION: The Importance of Virtual Teamwork & Competency Skills! Tyrell reflects on his experience supporting and mentoring children with learning challenges. Read the Blog Here   CBYF Annual Gathering!   This year's Communities Building Youth Futures gathering will be November 9-10 in Montréal, QC. The event will feature in-person and hybrid sessions for anyone working to build youth futures, young people, and CBYF members. Expect more details soon!   Upcoming Webinars   Youth Leading on Issues that Matter to Them: Climate, Poverty and Affordability   Date: Wednesday, July 20, 2022 \| 12:00‒1:00 p.m. ET Speakers: Haleema Ahmed, Manvir Bhangu, Sydney Campbell and Fadumo Diriye    Today's youth may be less likely to vote but are civically engaged and more informed about issues than previous generations of youth. Young people have higher rates of belonging to a group, organization or association than the rest of Canadians, and nearly half of all youth volunteer.   So, how do young people want to engage as leaders on important issues?   This webinar panel of young national researchers and advocates will discuss what they hear, see and think about with their peers. They will explore how youth want to be involved in matters that affect them and the solutions. They will focus on climate, poverty and affordability issues and how we can and should address these challenges simultaneously.
