Hi there,
The July BC Communities Ending Poverty CoP hosted Janelle Hatch and Seri Niimi-Burch, from the BCCDC for a presentation and discussion on the recently released Food Costing in BC 2022: Assessing the affordability of health eating report, including: setting the context, key data points, trends and regional variations, why this is important, and a brief discussion on an upcoming addendum for remote and Indigenous communities to be released in 2023.
You can now access the recording (Passcode: SQLvg9#= ) and PowerPoint presentation from the call.
Key Takeaways
- Collaboration and partnerships are key to the work undertaken to produce the report
- Income is the most significant predictor of food insecurity - yet 76% of food insecurity households have employment income
- 15% of BC households (1 in 7) or about 732,000 people were food insecurity in 2022
- Methodology is based on National Nutritious Food Basket (61 items)
- First report published since 2017 (due to pandemic); understanding that costs have increased from 2022 but key messages stay the same
- The Remote & Indigenous Communities Report (to be released later this year) will be more narrative-based, telling a more fulsome story to support policy changes
