Hi Maureen,
On the September BC Communities Reducing Poverty CoP, Lorenzo Magzul and Chelsea Power from the Community Social Planning Council of Greater Victoria shared the results of climate equity pilot projects. The conversation was facilitated by Tamarack's Director of Climate Transitions, Laura Schnurr, and explored program design through to implementation and evaluation.
Key Takeaways
- Pilot projects were co-developed with people with lived and living experience in hyper-local settings. Embedding equity and meaningful consultation from the beginning of the project led to higher-than-expected results.
- Engaging people with lived and living experience added expertise on how to reach others; their participation was one measure of success.
- TACES – a three-pronged pilot project looking at Transportation, Access, Climate, Economic, Security – Transportation was identified as contributing significantly to climate change as well as the second highest household cost.
- The Cycling Gender Gap Project identified complex barriers to cycling for women and non-binary communities tied to issues of gender and safety.
- Research on preparing for extreme heat events found that many recommended strategies were not accessible to low income renters.
- There is a need to ensure that everyone shares the same benefits and burdens from climate solutions regardless of one’s background and identity.
- Particularly with the e-bike program, there is opportunity to scale the project by working with other communities as well as all levels of government. Reach out to Diana for more information.
