The Tamarack Institute is a registered Canadian charity dedicated to ending poverty in all its forms, for good. We support real people and invest in real communities for long-term change.
By Mark Cabaj and Sylvia Cheuy
Across Turtle Island (North America), local communities are at a crossroads. So many of us are experiencing the impact of complex, global issues like poverty, climate change, and social inequities. And yet, our wisdom and effort to address these issues is often overlooked. It’s time to change that, and we can do this by embracing the power of place.
This paper, authored by Mark Cabaj and the Tamarack Institute’s Sylvia Cheuy, makes the case that local solutions led by ordinary people can have a powerful impact on global issues. This can be done by focusing locally on solutions that work in their “place.” The authors outline seven reasons why it makes sense to invest in locally led solutions and share real-world stories from across Turtle Island. These stories illustrate how the unique assets of “place” have been harnessed to create highly effective, innovative solutions to global issues that are sustainable and tailored to reflect local needs.
