Hi there,
It was truly a great few days at the Communities Building Youth Futures (CBYF) Member Retreat from May 10 to 11! The presence and active participation of our communities and members of the National Collaborative were incredibly valuable in helping us meet our goal of Co-Creating Solutions for the Future.
The strength and passion of the CBYF network were evident in conversations on connecting and mobilizing our work, in the open space discussions, as well as all other workshops.
We hope that the event, the Prince Albert hosting team, and the community left you all as grateful and inspired as we were for this great opportunity.
Thank you for learning with us and for everything you do to collaboratively build youth futures!

A Warm Welcome for CBYF Members in Kistahpinanihk (Prince Albert)
Pihtikwe (pih-ti-gway), meaning ‘enter’ or ‘come in’ in Plains Cree, would be the word that best describes the warm welcome we received during our time spent in Kistahpinanihk, more widely known as Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, for the Communities Building Youth Futures Member Retreat in the month of May. More than 100 guests were invited and hosted by the CBYF Prince Albert team and their community partners. Over the course of four days, CBYF members were immersed in the local culture, food, and land and were guided by the teachings of Elder Liz Settee and Elder Cecil Eashappie.
Community partners such as the Prince Albert Indian and Métis Friendship Centre stepped in to offer transportation for members who experienced flight delays, local Indigenous vendors and artisans organized to provide access to beaded jewelry, clothing, and art pieces for members to purchase, and Elder Cecil opened his heart and workshop to all while offering insight on sustainable harvesting practices and the seven sacred teachings. Elder Liz shared her good medicine with everyone and offered teachings on smudging protocols and support for youth members.
All of this, and more, was made possible through the collaboration and leadership offered by CBYF PA team members Nicole Matheis, Daphne Masih, and Dawn Robbins with support from many of the youth interns and leadership table members. This experience left a lasting impression on everyone in attendance, from coast to coast to coast.
Têniki (teen-ni-gi) meaning ‘thank you’ in Plains Cree to Kistahpinanihk (Prince Albert) for hosting us and for their continued generosity leading up to and following the member retreat. We can’t wait to connect with you all again next year!

We are so pleased to send along a few snapshots from our event in our Retreat Album.
And, as promised, the Retreat resources are now available in the Event Resource Library, including tools, slides, and materials related to the event's key themes.
We will be sending notes and further reflections from our time together over the coming weeks.
At the end of April 2023, as part of her duties with the Tamarack Institute’s Communities Building Futures for Youth team (CBYF), Manager of Communities Layla Belmahi had the opportunity to accompany Concertation Saint-Léonard on an exploratory mission to Brussels. The objective: to learn more about youth civic participation and other issues that concern them (urban safety, living in an intercultural context, housing, etc.), in a Belgian context.
