Vibrant Communities

Hi there,

If we are going to end poverty in a generation, our youth must be involved as participants and leaders in our work. This month we are offering a number of resources for you about: the inclusion of youth in your poverty reduction initiatives; the case for engaging youth; tools for including them in the process; cases of mobilizing and organizing; funding opportunities; and programs for youth that help develop assets. In particular, take a look at how the Yukon Anti-Poverty Coalition is providing platforms for youth to be engaged in activities that matter to their community.

Also of special note, Tamarack's Community Change Institute is beginning conversations with faculty and keynote speakers on the art of disruption. Join the webinar series this summer, then dive into the five-day event happening in vibrant Toronto this September. More details in our 'Get Involved' section, below.

Next month's issue of Cities Connect will focus on the human rights approach to poverty reduction. If you have any stories, news, or resources you would like to contribute, please contact natasha@tamarackcommunity.ca.

Sincerely,

The Vibrant Communities Canada Team

Sharing Successes from Whitehorse, Yukon

Poverty is more than a lack of income. Living a life free of poverty means being able to participate in our communities, actualizing our right to self-determination, and not living in fear of where the next meal is coming from.

Youth in Whitehorse and across the Yukon territory face numerous challenges - historic, systemic, and personal. The Yukon Anti-Poverty Coalition (YAPC) is mobilizing youth to implement their community's poverty reduction awareness, advocacy, and activities, empowering them to take leadership and create real impact for people who are struggling with poverty and homelessness.

Learn how Whitehorse is getting their next generation involved in poverty-related issues.

Moving the Conversation: The Living Wage, Poverty, and Policy

The Yukon Anti-Poverty Coalition released Whitehorse's living wage report at the beginning of July, becoming only the second Northern community to do so. The report revealed a wage rate of $19.12 per hour, one of the higher rates in Canada. Without a standard, reliable measure of poverty, the living wage is an important measure to highlight the struggles that people who are earning less than this wage undoubtedly face in meeting their basic needs.

Learn how the living wage is instigating conversations around poverty and policy changes.
